Master's Degree in International Management - Exchanges with Asia

The Master’s Degree in International Management specialised in Exchanges with Asia of the University of Le Havre is relatively young (initiated and developed progressively since 1991), however it gains an increasing reputation in France and abroad. The competence acquired from the study enables its alumni to build a career not only in business-related activities, but also in the field of international organisations, media, N.G.O., etc. Most of its alumni found their job in Asia and Europe. Confronted with the challenges of globalisation for the professional world, they recognise the relevance of their study in the University of Le Havre. Here are some of their remarks.
Sylvain JULIEN (Jakarta, Indonesia, study period 1995-1997)
I graduated from the Faculty of International Affairs, specialisation Trade with Asia, of the University of Le Havre, now Master’s Degree in the same name. I learned Indonesian Language and did all my researches and work on Indonesia. I was lucky to get a job in my country of specialisation so that I could capitalize on my university background. At the beginning of my stay here in Indonesia, I was welcomed by an expert of Indonesia with whom I spent several hours every evening. I realized at that time that the education I got at the University of Le Havre was of great quality. Indeed, we discussed about current Indonesian issues and managerial problems encountered by the French and other foreign companies in Indonesia. He gave me the feedback that he was impressed by the fact that I was pretty much aware of the “Do and Don’t” of this country, the Business Etiquettes of the region and on top of it that I could converse in Indonesian. Very few companies, not to mention universities, used to prepare their employees or students to the Asian environments and Asian realities. The University of Le Havre remains my favourite recommendation when people ask me where they can send their children to a good business school.
Indeed, I am always thankful to the University of Le Havre because, on many occasions, it was proven that I had a better understanding of the people we are working with. We avoided wrong decisions and expensive financial consequences. In my career as Hotel General Manager, I was sent to fix hotel problems where a good understanding of the local people was required in addition to the usual managerial duties, because my Head Office knew that I could work in remote areas without too much assistance. In remote areas at a time when the internet access was not as easy as today and where there was no bookshop, I relied sometimes on the notes I took in class!
Talking about the training the university provides on Economy, Financial Analysis, Marketing and Business Strategy, they are essential, especially when you are in a managerial position. Thanks to all the people who had this brilliant idea to create this “Affaires Internationales” school. Thanks to all the teachers and other participants who dedicate their time and energy to train the future executives and directors.
Delphine CANTREAU (Shanghai, Chine, study period 2005-2006)
After a bachelor’s degree in Applied Foreign Language Chinese-English, I continued my study in a master’s degree in International Affairs, specialised in Trade with Asia. I passed my first year of master’s degree in the University of La Rochelle, however, in order to enrich my training, I decided to follow the second year of master’s degree in the Faculty of International Affairs at Le Havre. The training programme was comprehensive and not only focused on China, but on the Asian continent as a whole. The subjects of study were diverse, which allow students to acquire maximum knowledge in different fields. Moreover, I found the teaching of Chinese was at very high level. I am satisfied by this study, which I recommend strongly. I work at present in Shanghai since almost a year. I am in charge of selling and marketing in a company of decoration and furniture. It is a local company created by a French in June 2006. My mission consists of business development related to potential customers of great standing (hotels, restaurants, architects,…).
