The CERMUD Laboratory at the University of Le Havre Normandy, in collaboration with the TVES Laboratory at the University of the Littoral Côte d’Opale and SFR Campus de la Mer, is organizing an international conference on maritime cruises on October 8 and 9, 2026, in Le Havre.
Structured over two days, this conference will examine cruises from legal, economic, social, and regional perspectives. The first day will be devoted to itineraries and regions, with discussions focusing in particular on port attractiveness, pollution, electrification, and overtourism. The second day will be dedicated to the ship and events that may occur on board, such as life on board, crises, accidents, and damage.
For several decades, the cruise industry has been experiencing sustained growth, raising complex issues that go far beyond the scope of maritime law alone. The boom in cruise tourism thus raises questions about the ability of the law to regulate a globalized phenomenon characterized by the enormous size of ships, the multitude of stakeholders, and the complexity of international and European regulations.
