Choosing your direction
Updated on: 10/06/2026At university, studies are organized according to the “LMD” (Licence-Master-Doctorat) system:
- the bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a bac +3
- Master’s degree at bac +5
- doctorate at bac +8
To obtain a diploma, you must validate your teaching units at the end of each semester to accumulate “ECTS” credits:
- One semester of courses equals 30 credits.
- One credit corresponds to around ten hours of lessons.
ECTS stands for European Credits Transfer System, a European credit transfer and accumulation system developed by the European Union to make it easier to read and compare study programs in different European countries, and to encourage study abroad.
The degrees offered are divided into different “faculties”, known as “components” or “UFR” (Unités de Formation et de Recherche). The University of Le Havre Normandie has 5 components:
- The Faculty of International Affairs.
- UFR des Sciences et techniques.
- UFR Humanités et Sociétés.
- University Institute of Technology (BUT – Bachelor of Technology – and professional licenses)
- Institut Supérieur d’Études Logistiques (ISEL), an engineering school specializing in logistics and mechanical engineering.
